I didn't know much about about low carb diets except a lot of negatives I read about the Atkins diet, but have learned an awful lot in the past few months. There are many drawbacks to low carb diets, but there are also lots of benefits Rapid weight loss, especially in men, can be easily attained, though it is the long term maintenance of weight which can be a problem.
Were I to personally choose a diet it would probably be low carb initially for the rapid weight loss, then a more balanced diet suited to my lifestyle and calory intake to ensure that I had a slight daily calory deficit. In that way, weight loss would be by loss of fat and not muscle tissue. This is what most of the experts seem to agree on.
However, there are some who swear by low carb diets if done properly. This book is an excellent account of how to lose weight using a low carb eating plan, and Robert Ronkin seems to know what he is talking about. It is not a diet book and certainly different. Check it out here:
