HOW TO REDUCE WEIGHT AND ADD MUSCLE


There are many weight reduction, or slimming, programs available and lots of boring diets.  Some weight loss fads have no lasting effect:  you take it off for a few weeks then put it all back on again. It is important that if you want to lose weight, your weight reduction is not just temporary.  Fad diets can slow down your metabolism so that use less and less energy.  You therefore have to diet even more extremely or you will put all your weight loss back on again.  If you do so without proper medical supervision you can develop serious health problems.

Some weight loss plans can be dangerous unless supplemented with vitamins and minerals.  Other result in loss of both fat and muscle tissue.  Others give a quick weight loss due to reduction in the body water content which quickly put back on again.

Others, such as the high protein very low carbohydrate Atkins diet, have dubious benefits and the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine consider it dangerous in that it can cause a dramatic increase in cholesterol and reduction in body calcium leading to potentially severe health problems and osteoporosis in later life. 

Jody Gorran who developed a life threatening arterial blockage after two and half years on Atkins is taking a lawsuit out in Florida against Atkins Nutritionals, which the latter have been unsuccessful twice in applications to have it dismissed. Click here for details:  www.atkinsdietalert.org/  
When reading this it should be borne in mind that the PCRM is a body which advocates vegetarianism, though it seems sensible that a diet high in cholesterol and low in calcium should cause problems in the long term.
 
This is not say that we recommend ever one come off their Atkins plan, and it is certainly very good for the very obese, but like any diet it should be used sensibly. Diet by iteself is not usually the best way to lose weight.

It is a simple fact that weight is lost if the energy used by the body exceeds the energy taken in. It does not matter how this energy is measured, whether in calories or any other unit.  If you take in fewer calories than you use through muscular exercise you lose fat, and therefore lose weight where you want to lose it.
