Cranberries health benefits are so great that I wonder why you only eat cranberries at Thanksgiving or Christmas; along with the turkey! They have so many health benefits that you should be eating them more often. Or you can just as many, if not more, cranberries health benefits by drinking them!
The cranberries health benefits have been recognized by Native American and many other civilisaztions for thousands of years, by whom they were used as preservatives for dried meats. It was only later that the scientific reason for this was found in the benzoic acid cranberries contain. Sailors, too, found a use for them in their Vitamin C content. They did not know why at the time, but they were found to be as effective as limes in preventing scurvy on long voyages. We all know now that scurvy is prevented by an adequate intake of vitamin C.
A large part of the cranberries health benefits come from their high Vitamin C
content. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and destroys free radicals. Free radicals are chemicals which interfere with the operation of the heart an also contribute to some cancers. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, therefore, can prolong life by stopping free radicals from affecting the heart, and also protect against some cancers. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, also control other conditions such as high cholesterol levels.
Research has indicated that cranberries health benefits may be due to them having more antioxidants than many other common fruits, and this is a major reason in itself for it to play a greater past in our normal daily diet.
Recent research has also indicated that cranberries can prevent certain bacteria from adhering to the urethra (the urinary tract) and by doing so prevent some serious infections. This effect may also prevent bacteria from adhering to, and infecting, other parts of the body. The bacterium in question is e.coli, which is a common cause of food poisoning.
There are many ways in which cranberries can be included in the diet. They can be used dried in cooking, such as in cookies or cranberry bread, and fresh cranberries make excellent dressings, garnishes and sauces for , for example, turkey! They can also be drank. Cranberry juice is very popular on both sides of the Atlantic, and its health benefits have been publicly promoted by the Duchess of York. Cranberries health benefits are not affected by they in which the cranberries are ingested.
Although many of the cranberries health benefits are known to be due to their being a prime source of nutrients such as vitamin C, and though studies are continuing as to its full range of health benefits, there are believe by may to be many more still to be proven, and there is a growing body of people who are using it daily as part of a healthy eating (and drinking) programme.
